Remember this when you’re starting out as a beginner runner; you do not need fancy running equipment. I’m a firm believer that you really don’t need more than a handful of essentials to feel perfectly prepared for a run. So don’t listen to the salesperson at your local running store who’s trying to sell you sunglasses, a water belt, and a fancy hat. There are only a handful of things you really need!
Running equipment essentials:
- Good shoes. DO NOT start with your 10-year old gym shoes! Everyone is different and the shoe that works for you may not work for someone else. If you want a place to start, I love Brooks and Mizunos.
- A good GPS watch. I think it’s really important to have a good gps watch. In order to track your progress, you’re going to need a tool to track your workouts. I’ve been using my Garmin 235 for over 3 years and love it.
- Generic gym shorts. I like compression, some people like more flowy. Try some on and figure out what you like. Where to look? Try Old Navy, Target, and TJMaxx.
- A good sports bra. If you’re a girl, you’re going to need something for support. Any brand will do as long as it’s comfortable.
- A couple simple, lightweight t-shirts. It doesn’t matter where they’re from, cheap is good!
- A couple light, simple options for layering. Again, brand doesn’t matter at all. Comfort is key!
- A reflector. It can be a top, vest, or belt depending on where you’re running and the time of the day. I wear a bright yellow top when I’m in the city or on the road, but in my neighborhood or at the track I don’t wear one.
- Headphones. Running with music helps make it more enjoyable. I love Aftershokz, but your crappy 10-year earbuds are fine!
- A phone. For women, I think this is a must-have. You should always have something on you that can connect you to help if you need it.
Now you have the tools, what about the right habits to be successful? I made a list of some tips on things that will help make you successful from the start.
